So I consulted a gearbox expert and he claims he's about 90% sure it's not the gearbox (phew). He and I agreed that the most likely culprits are a worn out clutch pressure plate and thrust bearing, even though the clutch feels fine on the pedal. If that's correct it's a $260 dollar job if I buy a LUK clutch kit. Does anybody have any experience with LUK parts? How's the quality?
For now I've decided to not do anything. The car is perfectly fine today and at the moment I'm slightly low on cash. If the CLK shits the bed completely I guess I'll have to nick my dad's Tranny van, which I don't mind.

LUK = pretty standard aftermarket/OEM German clutch gear. I think I put one or two in one of the Audis over the years. Nothing too exciting. It just worked.

Top trivia: LuK made the Audi Multitronic CVT and now they make the 7 speed twin clutch that replaced it.
The Multitronic has issues.

Great news! They're an OE supplier for a lot of vehicles, Germans included. I wouldn't hesitate on using Luk parts.

That's not too bad if that's the real problem. Better than a blown transmission!
